Kimberley Road, Cardiff
A small urban garden reimagined for modern living and year-round use
This compact, north-facing back garden in Cardiff was redesigned for a middle-aged couple who wanted a low-maintenance, functional space for socialising, relaxing, and making better use of the outdoor area. The existing garden had fallen into disrepair, with an overgrown layout, poor access, and an unused garage filled with rubble.
The new scheme transformed the space with a split-level layout: a smart upper patio for everyday access, bin storage and potted plants, and a larger lower-level seating and dining area positioned beneath a bespoke pergola. Timber sleeper planters brought greenery and warmth into the design, while a raised wildflower bed added colour, softness, and seasonal interest.
A new staircase and screen fencing helped structure the garden and improve privacy, while the demolition of the garage made way for a gravel parking bay with timber gates—doubling up as a practical rear access point and a discreet storage area.
The overall result is a clean, versatile outdoor space that feels private, modern, and well connected to the home—designed for practical use throughout the seasons and tailored to the client’s lifestyle.

The Completed Garden
Final Drawing

The finished garden brings the design to life, with clean lines, warm tones, and practical detailing. The metal pergola provides a sheltered dining spot on the lower patio, surrounded by layered planting and timber planters. The stepped layout improves flow and usability, creating a relaxed outdoor space that feels calm, contained, and connected to the home.
